Panel
Discussion: Coloring of Plastics—More
Than Meets the Eye
The recent recalls of toys manufactured
in China due to lead in their paints
is a reminder of the need for understanding
and vigillance to ensure compliance
with regulations on the use of colorants,
inks, paints and other additives that
might have much less obvious toxicity
issues. International trade of decorated
plastic articles presents growing
complication in assuring compliance
of imports, and for exporters, in
the web of regulations in different
countries. We will feature a panel
of three expert speakers from the
colorants, compounding and master
batch industries: Howard Kennedy,
North American Sales Manager for Dominion
Colour Corporation (providing an update
on the use for both organic and heavy
metal pigments, their regulation and
toxicity issues); John Wood, Technical
Manager, Teknor Color Company (speaking
on the use of spectral analysis tools
such as XRF screening tools for the
presence of heavy metals); Chuck Robins,
Global Market Segment Manager for
Clariant MB Division (reviewing the
impact of the new European REACH initiative
on American plastics fabricators).
They will provide an overview and
selected aspects of additives compliance,
and will be available to field your
questions. Also Pioneer Valley SPE
Scholaships to students in Plastics
Engineering will be given.
