Abstract:
In early 2005 the Xerox Corporation began deploying its Design for Lean Six Sigma (DfLSS) initiative. Many companies’ DfLSS deployments are typically structured similarly to their Lean Six Sigma programs. This presentation outlines an unconventional DfLSS deployment model used at Xerox Corp. to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and predictability of technology and product-development organizations. This custom deployment model was structured around a building-block training structure, a flexible competency-based certification process, and integrated coaching. DfLSS program-deployment results include high employee satisfaction, over 1000 product-delivery professionals trained, and significant product-delivery success stories.

The lessons learned typically focused on what worked, what did not work, and what ultimately could be characterized as interesting. This presentation also includes what was learned and the impact these lessons had on the overall DfLSS program.

Presenter:   Norm Fowler, Keys Six Sigma
Norm is president of Keys Six Sigma, a consulting firm established to help companies sort through the issues and concerns about developing and deploying Lean Six Sigma programs. Prior to starting Keys Six Sigma, Norm was a member of the Xerox Corp.’s Lean Six Sigma senior staff as Strategic Initiatives Manager, responsible for developing and deploying the DfLSS and DMAIC Green Belt programs. During his 27 years at Xerox, Norm held numerous technology development, strategic planning, and management responsibilities.

Norm holds an MS in plastics from the University of Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts, from which he also graduated summa cum laude with a BS in plastics engineering. He also holds an associate’s degree in applied science in plastics technology from the State University of New York at Morrisville. Norm has been a member of SPE for 34 years and has served the Society at the Section, Division, and international levels. He is an International Past President, a Distinguished Member, and an Honored Service Member of SPE.
