PlastiVan Visit - I
The TPE SIG along with the Detroit Section of SPE each sponsored a PlastiVan presentation at the City of Taylor, Michigan middle school (Hoover Middle School). This is the third year of sponsorship at the Taylor Schools. As in the past, Margie Weiner, the program facilitator, did a great job in presenting the program in a way that all the students greatly enjoyed it and were very enthusiastic about the content. There were interesting hands-on experiments each student performed along with Margie’s demonstration experiments. Along with the demonstrations there was information exchanged, with student participation, about where plastics are used and how important they are to every-day life. The teachers also planned class instruction before and after the PlastiVan program in order to further emphasize aspects of chemistry, plastics and the many uses of plastics.
The students also had a chance to give feedback on what they thought about the program. Here are a few examples: “It’s so cool and amazing that you can do all that stuff (with chemistry and plastics)” ,I really thought that it was one of the best times I have had with science”, “It was all so amazing, I am thinking of entering your job area (plastics) when I start to work”, ‘I learned that you can clean oil spills with (with plastics and chemistry)”, “I now know how much it (plastics) is in my daily life”
