Compounding
Compounding is the ancient art and science of mixing resins, fillers, reinforcements and other additives to make a functional and useful material. It began with early man formulating paints for cave painting as well as personal decoration and has continued ever since. RDC 7/27/2009
"Plastic is a polymer that has been treated with additives to make it commercially useful." Additives and modifiers are those ingredients added to make the polymer a viable commercial material. Resins refer to the polymers before mixing with the other additives. The final recipe is the formulation and the mixing or forming the actual material from the recipe is, strictly speaking, compounding.
