Plastics can help or hurt the environment. Many times developments that seem so useful at first actually damage the environment or lead to health problems. More often than not, the situation is a balance; that is there are very positive economic and functional benefits but there can still be long term undesirable environmental effects. Sometimes in low volume there is no appreciable environment effects but in the case of large or massive applications undesirable effects develop. The engineer must alway look for both the good and the bad. When bad effects become apparent, efforts must be made to minimize these effects and develop strategies to reduce or eliminate these effects.
