Polyoxazoles
“Oxazole is the parent compound for a vast class of heterocyclic aromatic organic compounds. These are azoles with an oxygen and a nitrogen separated by one carbon. Oxazoles are aromatic compounds but less so than the thiazoles. Oxazole is a weak base; its conjugate acid has a pKa of 0.8, compared to 7 for imidazole.” (Wikipedia, Oxazoles, 5/21/2011)

Method for the synthesis of a polyoxadiazole polymer
de Figueiredo Gomes and Loos of GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht, Germany, synthesizeda polyoxadiazole polymer by heating polyphosphoric acid to a temperature of at least about 160.degree. C. and making a solution by mixing hydrazine sulfate salt with one or more dicarboxylic acids or their derivatives in the heated polyphosphoric acid. The solution is heated under an inert gas atmosphere and the polymer is precipitated in a basic solution. The polyoxadiazole polymer can be produced as a homopolymer or copolymer, and may be used to produce a membrane or fibers. (RDC 5/12/2011)
