Abstract: Titanates (zirconates) have Six Functions: 1) Coupling – Titanates form a 1.5 nanometer atomic monolayer on inorganics/organics causing dispersion and viscosity reduction. Exfoliation of nanoparticulate in the flux phase; 2) Catalysis – 0.2% titanate by weight of polymer allows up to 40% faster processing at l~9% lower temperatures; 3) Heteroatom Functionality – Example, pyrophosphato titanates create FR intumescence. Synergizes FR performance of ATH, Mg(OH)2, AOM, etc.; 4) Compatibilization – causes adhesion and hydrophobicity; 5) Curative – provides amino, mercapto, acrylic and methacrylic functions for various thermoset cures; 6) Hybrid – Coupling agents can be tailored for a myriad of polymer composite systems and processes.
