Scholarships
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Extrusion Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), I would like to inform you of: (1) The Lew Erwin Scholarship ($2500); (2) The (NEW) best paper presented by a student award ($500); (3) The (NEW) student chapter awards for a plastics related event (4 awards at $250 each).

1. LEW ERWIN SCHOLARSHIP ($2500)
The Extrusion Division of the SPE has established a scholarship fund in honor of the memory of Lew Erwin to support undergraduate and graduate research in the field of polymer extrusion.

There are six parts to the application:

(A) CV - maximum 2 pages and a completed application form (available from the SPE Foundation)

(B) Official Academic Transcripts of the candidate's academic record
(Both undergraduate and graduate, for M.S. or Ph.D. candidates)

(C) Career Objectives - A brief essay (less than 250 words) on what enticed the candidate to enter the polymer field, and what are his/her current thoughts about a career in plastics.

(D) Research - Succinct description in no more than 500 words of the Senior project, MS or PhD project which this Scholarship will help support. Include background, objective and proposed experiment(s) or computer simulations. If available attach one copy of a paper submitted or published in a journal or presented at ANTEC or another plastics meeting. The scholarship winner will be expected to furnish a final research summary report.

(E) Advisor Recommendation - A brief summary of capabilities with respect to polymer engineering by the candidate's research advisor.

(F) Copy of the SPE membership card or application made for SPE membership. Preference will be given to candidates who are members on or before the submission deadline.

2. BEST PAPER PRESENTED BY A STUDENT AWARD ($500)
The EXDIV of the SPE has been awarding the best paper award at ANTEC EXDIV sessions for many years, and it will continue to do so. Effective 2002 another $500 award will be offered to the best paper presented by a student at any of the EXDIV sessions at the ANTEC. All students who will be presenting papers at the Nashville ANTEC (EXDIV sessions) will be eligible. Presenters should inform the session chairs at the ANTEC if they are students.

3. STUDENT CHAPTER AWARDS FOR A PLASTICS RELATED EVENT (4 awards of $250).
Effective 2002 the EXDIV of SPE will offer 4 awards for a worthy event related to plastics. This might be for support of student travel to visit a plastics plant, expenses related to invitation of a speaker, award for a best student presentation during a local conference etc. etc. Student chapter advisors or representatives can apply by sending a brief description of the event and the activity to:

Division Scope:
It is the purpose of the Extrusion Division of SPE to advance the technical body of knowledge in the field of plastics extrusion industry as a whole. This will be done by study within the Division, by conducting seminars at all levels of proficiency, by promoting extrusion technical activities at the local levels of the Society, and by publishing plastics extrusion technical information which otherwise might not be disseminated.
