Role & Responsibilities:
SPE Directors are members of the SPE Board of Directors, with a responsibility to support the President, the Chief Staff Executive, the Society, and the initiatives described by the Strategic Plan. SPE Directors are either elected or appointed.
- Elected by Council: Elected Directors serve 3-year terms.
- Appointed by the President: Appointed Directors serve a term of 1 year.
General Expectations:
The Board of Directors of SPE is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Society. This is a role that requires dedicated service and commitment. All Board of Directors activity shall be conducted in a manner consistent with the SPE Bylaws, SPE Operating Policies, and the general interests of the Society as a whole. Board of Directors members are expected to be open-minded, good listeners, and willing to make decisions that are in the best interest of the Society.
- Attendance - The Board of Directors meets at least monthly by teleconference (~2 hours per call) and about 4 times per year face-to-face (1.5-3 days per meeting). Participation in Board of Directors, Council, and other designated meetings, typically scheduled during regular business hours, is required to ensure effective decision-making and to support effective communication. Some meetings will require travel away from regularly scheduled work activities. Board of Directors members are expected to obtain employer support for participation as attendance is expected at each.
- Time Commitment In addition to participation in scheduled meetings, Board of Directors members are expected to contribute substantial additional time in support of their assigned roles. Examples include, but are not limited to, duties in support of assigned committees and taskforces, maintaining emails and communication via SPE Communities, review and preparation of reports, meeting preparation, and other general work assignments. Board of Directors members should expect to spend at least 5 hours per week in addition to participation time in meetings which can be accomplished outside normal business hours.
Required for Eligibility:
A candidate must be an SPE member in good standing to be eligible.
The ideal candidate for Director should have:
a) a professional degree related to or employed within the plastics industry,
b) at least five (5) years of professional experience within the plastics industry,
c) currently have at least three (3) years of continuous SPE membership in good standing, and
d) served as a member of an SPE Committee or SPE Chapter Board, for at least three (3) full years.
