The presentation covers several key topics related to flame retardants (FRs). It begins with an overview of the regulatory environment and the necessity for FRs. Basic concepts such as flame retardant mechanisms, ingredients, and testing methods are explained. The process of formulating FR systems to meet specific application requirements is discussed, with actual flammability test videos shown to illustrate the measurements taken. Insights into new developments in non-halogenated flame retardant (NHFR) technology are provided, along with the impact of sustainability on NHFR advancements.
The workshop is taught by instructors with decades of industrial experience in formulating and compounding, as well as personnel with real-world experience in commercializing non-halogenated flame retardant (NHFR) formulations and technologies.

Roger W. Avakian, Owner of Avakian PolyChem Consulting LLC, consults in graphene, specialty chemicals, polymer blends, and non-halogen flame retardant additives. He retired from PolyOne (now Avient) in May 2019 after 19 years, serving as their first CTO and PolyOne Fellow, contributing to significant developments in biomaterials, high-temperature polymers, and non-halogen flame retardant technologies. Previously, he worked at GE Plastics for 20 years in various technical and management positions. Roger holds 86 U.S. patents, has presented and published globally, and became a Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Fellow in 2020. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, SAMPE, and PINFA-NA, advocating for sustainable flame retardants. Roger earned his B.S. in Chemistry with Honors from the University of California, San Diego in 1973 and is a Master Black Belt in Six Sigma.
