Removing the Black Hole in Plastics Recycling

Presented by:
Tom Mestdag, The Shepherd Color Company

CICP’s or Complex Inorganic Color Pigments, sometimes referred to as MMO’s (Mixed Metal Oxides), are pigments that offer exceptional characteristics : these pigments are incredibly inert and stable & have a wide resin compatibility. The paper will discuss how these pigments are being manufactured & what these characteristics are, to continue to focus on IR reflective pigments. IR reflective pigments are adding an extra functionality in a sense that these can either be used for their cooling effect during outdoor exposure or can allow a more sustainable solution to black plastics recycling.  IR properties are inherent in the pigments industry as the IR reflectivity will not degrade over time, nor will the IR properties & pigment migrate out of the plastic. Standard sorting methods are using near-infrared light (NIR) to scan the plastics.  This NIR light allows to identify the polymer.  Carbon black, while being commonly used, interferes with the reflectance by absorbing the NIR light which makes identifying the polymer type impossible. IR reflective pigments allow for a more sustainable solution to black plastic recycling.

About Tom Mestdag
