Screening Processing Stabilizer Formulations for Polypropylene Using Multifactor Experimental Design and Microcompounding

Presented by:
Niall Marshall, Everspring Middle East

It has been shown that studying the processing stability of polypropylene using continuous micro-compounding provides comparable results with statistical repeatability to the traditional multiple extrusion approach but with the added advantage of being quicker and requiring less material. We have used this approach with a multifactor experimental design to compare the performance of different stabilizer systems made up of different primary- and secondary-antioxidants at different loadings to evaluate the efficacy of stabilizer systems rather than of the various antioxidants themselves.

About Niall Marshall

Dr. Niall Marshall is the Technical Director of Everspring Middle East W.L.L., a specialty chemicals company supplying additives to the petrochemical industry in the Middle East and Africa.

He started his professional life working in the Research and Development Group of Sasol Polymers in South Africa on the development of a family of novel poly(propyleneco-1-pentene) copolymers which he took from the laboratory and continued to work with them as they were commercialized. From R&D he moved to Product Development and Process Optimization where he was responsible for additivation of polyolefins. He established and was responsible for the thermal analysis and spectroscopy laboratories as well as the polymer processing laboratory.

He then joined Sasol Wax where he was the Market Development Manager for the Plastics Industry for Europe, Asia and North America. In this role he worked not only with waxes used as lubricants in the PVC industry but also with FT waxes as non-polar processing aids in polyolefins and engineering polymers.

In 2006 he accepted a position with Ciba (later BASF) in Bahrain as the Regional Technical Manager for the Plastics Industry in the Middle East and Africa, also taking on roles in Business Development and Key Account Management.

In 2010 he joined Everspring Middle East as Technical Director, a role which also included providing application support globally.

Education
Niall has BSc(Hons) and MSc degrees in Chemistry from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) and a DPhil from the University of Sussex (United Kingdom) where he studied the “Physical and Morphological Aspects of Polymer Stability”.
